Ah, March. The month of college basketball. A tournament filled with upsets, future NBA stars clashing against one another, and ESPN trying desperately to figure out how to continue to talk about Zion Williamson even though his team was eliminated in the Elite 8.
The NCAA Championship goes underway today, April 8th. Texas Tech faces off against Virginia tonight at 8:20 pm. This will be the first time in the national championship for both programs ever. Virginia is coached by Tony Bennett, while Texas Tech is led by Chris Beard.
Virginia entered this tournament as one of the four #1 seeds. For those who remember, this team was beaten in an upset game against #16 UMBC, a team who didn't even make the tournament this year. History did not repeat itself, as the team was able to beat opponents like #4 Florida State, underdog bracket busters Oregon, and the red hot #5 Auburn.
There's not a lot of flashy recruits on either team, which makes this game so much more interesting. Virginia does have sharpshooter Kyle Guy on their lineup, a player who came in clutch against Auburn by hitting game winning free throws (boring!). Virginia also has big man Jack Salt and guards Ty Jerome and De'Andre Hunter who have all been major contributors to this team.
Texas Tech was not even considered by many to go far, despite being a #3 seed. Despite the lack of publicity, this team beat some power house programs, such as #2 Michigan by outshooting them, #2 Michigan State in the Final Four, and the mighty #1 Gonzaga.
Another team with not a lot of big name guys. Matt Mooney was MONEY in this team's matchup against Michigan St., scoring 22 points. Brandone Francis is a sleeper of a player who looks NBA caliber to me, and how can you cheer against a guy with the name like David Moretti? Trust me, the pronunciation is WAY different.
This will be the first time in history these two teams face off in the championship. The spread for this game is UVA -1, with the over/under at 118.5. Who do I got winning? Texas Tech. Their gritty defense and team mentality is gonna be the deciding factors to slightly push them over the edge. Texas Tech on the over. You heard it here first.
My first bet on a game ever published in writing, btw. Gotta love sports, right?
