It’s very rare that when you think of an NFL franchise, a kicker comes to mind. The Bears are no ordinary franchise.
Robbie Gould, former Chicago Bears, New York Giants, and current San Francisco 49ers kicker has requested to be traded from the 49ers. He is not interested in resigning with the team after spending two seasons there.
Why is this relevant? Why does a kicker requesting a trade hold value to any team, specially the Bears? Cody Parkey. That’s why.
Robbins Gould played for the Bears between 2005-2015. He was cut in 2015, where he then played a season for the Giants before heading over to San Francisco.
The 49ers have said they will not trade Gould, which in my opinion is ridiculous. Kickers have very little trade value, so anything that a rebuilding team could get for him would be worth a lot more than keeping a kicker who refuses to be there.
The 49ers do have Gould franchise tagged, but he has not showed up to any off season training yet for 2019. He has until September 7th, so it seems the 49ers aren’t in any rush.
Fun fact: Robbie Gould is currently the Chicago Bears franchise’s highest scorer every. To put in perspective how great he really was back when he wore blue and orange.
The 2019 roster currently houses 3 kickers the Bears have signed since releasing Cody Parkey: Redford Jones, Chris Blewitt, and recently Elliot Fry. It would be a crowded place to add another, and if the Bears did acquire Gould, it would send a message that he would be the guy for the season.
Gould has said he would love to return to Chicago. His family lives here, and several times he’s stated how he loves this city!
I would like nothing more than for us to get Robbie. He was 97.1% in 2018, and is arguably one of the best kickers in the league. He would be an upgrade to a team itching to hold up the Lombardi trophy. It’s a bit unrealistic, but I’m keeping my hopes up.
I say unrealistic, yet this is also the team that got Khalil Mack. In Pace We Trust!
