It's funny, when I first created this blog I imagined myself really only writing about Chicago sports. Then my football team was robbed of a win, my basketball team has 10 wins, and don't even get me started on the Hawks. Time to do some research on baseball, otherwise expect some Pro Bowl and NFL draft posts.
In any case, today is the date of the College Football National Championship. The matchup features #1 seed Alabama taking on the #2 seed Clemson. The teams have met here three times prior to this, with Alabama winning the last meeting in 2018. The game will be played at 7:00 pm Central Time on ESPN.
The history of this team has been all Bama. Since first playing one another in 1900, Alabama has won 14 of the total 18 times the two teams have clashed. The last time Clemson won, Deshaun Watson was at quarterback back in 2017. (Speaking of Deshaun, tough loss on Saturday, buttttt I'm cheering for the Colts in the NFL playoffs now, since Chicago lost. My heart breaks having to write that, but the Colts are deadly right now, and I really like Andrew Luck and his story).
Speaking of quarterbacks, both teams house their own weapons behind center. Alabama's quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,671 yards, 41 touchdowns, and only 4 interceptions as the sophomore QB has led his team to an undefeated season.
Tagovailoa did suffer an ankle injury on Dec. 1, but is expected to play tonight, as Alabama head coach Nick Saban said he is "ahead of schedule". If he is unable to go, Jalen Hurts will have to step in and take his place. Hurts was the quarterback prior to the Championship game last year, when Tua led the team to a win over Clemson when Hurts got, well, hurt.
On the other side of things, Clemson's offense is lead by Trevor Lawrence. Besides a stat line of 2,993 yards, 27 touchdowns, and QBR of 154.8, Lawrence has some of the best hair I have ever seen from a college player. The dude has some SERIOUS lettuce. Major props to you, fella.
Football isn't just an offensive game, of course. There's also the defense. Both teams have had elite defenders on the other side of the ball. Many of these said players will most likely be top NFL Draft prospects this year (which for Chicago, isn't relevant, we traded our picks for some guy named Khalil Mack).
Pretty cool stat line I found while doing research for this article about these two teams this season. There's a reason why these teams are meeting again for the fourth time in the final game!
It's shaping up to be an epic Monday night college football game. Both teams have a lot to prove. As this image below from ESPN shows best, they couldn't be satisfied at just 3, right?
Plus, who doesn't love Toy Story?
