Football free agency is an incredible time, and this year has been an absolute show: Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders, Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns, and Leveon Bell to the New York Jets have been a few of the highlights.
This writer could care less about those teams though (I mean not true, I love football). This writer is more passionate about the Chicago Bears, who are celebrating their 100th season this year!
There's new faces to the team, players resigned, and big name Bears lost. To save a bit of reading, I will list some of the additions, resigns, and players who have moved to new teams.
NEWCOMERS:
RB Mike Davis: 2 yr contract (pending on physical)
CB Buster Skrine: 3 yr, $16.5 million, $8 million guaranteed
WR/KR/RB Cordarrelle Patterson: 2 yr, $10 million
OL Ted Larsen: 1 yr deal
RESIGNED: TE Ben Braunecker: 2 yr deal
OL Rashaad Coward
OLB Isaiah Irving
DE Roy Robert-Harrison
(note: Robert-Harrison, Irving, and Coward are all tendered contracts)
BEARS WHO HAVE SIGNED ELSEWHERE: SS Adrian Amos: Green Bay Packers: 4 yr deal
WR Josh Bellamy: New York Jets
LG Eric Kush: Cleveland Browns
There are obviously some Bears who will become free agents not mentioned above, including CB Bryce Callahan and P Pat McDonnell. What breaks my heart as a Bears fan is losing Adrian Amos, to the Packers specifically. Amos was drafted 4 years ago, back around when I really got into Bears football, and I really loved his Penn State, underdog status he carried. Plus, that fella can HIT. Oh well, the contract is well deserved. Best of luck #38
PS: we still have Eddie Jackson :)
Patterson is probably the signing I like the best so far. With the loss of Bellamy in free agency, and Kevin White most likely hitting the market, he fits himself into the 3rd or 4th WR spot, as well as aid in special teams. This is a Nagy kinda guy; remember when he torched the Bears kicking team on a kickoff return? I do!
The Howard trade rumors continue to grow, and with Mike Davis coming into a loaded RB group, it seems almost certain. We'll see where that goes.
S/O to Khalil Mack, who agreed to a contract reconstruction that freed up $11 million dollars for the Bears to use for the offseason. You really can't hate this guy, unless you're matched up against him.
There are still some big name free agents left the Bears can go after. Safety Eric Berry was released by the Kansas City Chiefs, LB Justin Houston could be a cheap addition, RB Adrian Peterson has found his legs again, and SS HaHa Clinton-Dix will be getting a work out with the Bears.
UPDATE: the Bears have signed HaHa Clinton-Dix to a 1 year, $3.5 million deal! He’ll be reunited with Alabama teammate Eddie Jackson.
I'll do another update post NFL draft, unless another Khalil Mack deal occurs again. For now, keep your phones tuned to Twitter updates, watch some March Madness, and get excited for the return of the Monsters of the Midway. Bear Down!
