Lion King Trailer 2 Analysis

Updated: Apr 10, 2019

2019 is OFFICIALLY the year of movies. Well, until 2020 at least. We'll call 2019 the year of Disney remakes for now!

An all new trailer for the live action "Lion King" has officially dropped, and there's a LOT to go over. Buckle up, it's time for some trailer analysis.

For one, here's the trailer for those who wish to watch it again:

We all know the plot of this movie, so rather than focus on those elements, I want to discuss other things, like parallels to the original 1994 movie and characters in the film.

Like I said in my last Lion King post (which I will link as well), the cast of this movie is incredible. The only two voices we hear in this trailer are James Earl Jones Mufasa, and Chiwetel Ejiofer's Scar. Both sound fantastic and match perfectly with the characters they portray.

Scar's appearance seems a bit weird to me. At first, I didn't like it, but after some further re-watching, I realized that it would be impossible to capture the exact look of the old characters. It's the same as Pumba or Zazu's new looks- the producers are recreating animated characters into their proper and real animal looks.

Speaking of Pumba, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the clip of Pumba and Timon singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Their chemistry will be a key factor in this movie, as their roles from the first movie were humor as well as developing young Simba.

Not a word from Simba, speaking of which. Both his young and older versions are shown in the trailer, yet not one word is spoken from the character being played by Donald Glover. It has me a bit anxious for the main character, which may be Disney's goal.

SO. MUCH. NOSTALGIA. For one, the trailer shares songs straight from the first movie. It made me feel like a kid again. Another big clip from the trailer was the growth of Simba from cub to full grown lion, as he walks behind Timon and Pumba, just like he did in the song Hakuna Matata in the 1994 classic.

In fact, there's a LOT that goes along the same as the old movie, depicted in this Youtube video below.

Watching Mufasa die is gonna be REALLY hard to do again. It's been over 20 years and I'm still not over it. Hopefully, we'll get Scar's legendary line of "Long Live the King!"

May you take your own place in the Circle of Life, by finding a theatre and seeing the Lion King July 19th!
