So you've never watched a Marvel movie before?
As of this weekend, "Avengers: Endgame" has destroyed the box office, making $1.2 billion its opening weekend! If you haven't seen it yet, you're truly missing out. But what if you've never seen one super hero movie? How can you catch up? Fear not, I am here to help!
The following are the MCU movies you NEED to watch before seeing Endgame due to their importance, character introduction/development, and role in the story arch of the Infinity saga.
"The Avengers" (2012):
This is an obvious one. The movie introduces the team to one another and shows off the skills of the original team as they take on the trickster Loki. The movie showcases some of the army of Thanos, as well as gives a small clip of the Mad Titan at the end. It's available to download on Hulu and Amazon.
"Avengers: Infinity War" (2018):
Another obvious one, as this movie is the first time the Avengers actually face off against Thanos. It contains all the Infinity Stones, as well as the effort put force by the Avengers to stop Thanos before he wipes out half the universe. Events in this movie impact "Endgame". It's available on Netflix.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014):
One of the most entertaining MCU movies around, Guardians tells the story of Star Lord, Groot, Drax, Rocket, and Gamora: a team of misfits trying to save the galaxy. It shows off Thanos more, as well as the storyline of Gamora, daughter of Thanos. It also details more on the Power Stone. Available to be streamed on Hulu and Amazon!
"Captain America: Civil War" (2016):
This may seem far fetched, but this movie serves an important role. It brings forth new characters Black Panther and Spider-Man. The results of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" affect this movie tremendously, as the Avengers split apart and fight one another. This division greatly weakens the Avengers for Thanos in Infinity War, and it's available on Amazon and Hulu.
"Thor: Ragnorok" (2017):
Arguably one of the best MCU movies and the best in the Thor saga, "Thor Ragnorok" details what was going on with the God of Thunder during the Avengers falling through, as well as the Hulk. It also ends with Thanos attacking Thor, which is how Infinity War ends. The movie is available on Netflix!
The next 3 are not necessary, but do have some importance, and if you want a more pure and attached experience to Endgame, you should also see these:
"Dr. Strange" (2016):
Besides introducing a new character, "Dr. Strange" explains the origins of the Time Stone, as well as some of the magic Strange uses later on, like the portals he utilizes to transport others to the battlefields Thanos is on. Available on Netflix for watching.
"Ant-Man and the Wasp" (2018):
Another movie available on Netflix, the movie dives more into what happens to Scott Lang after Civil War, as well as explain the quantum realm mentioned in "Dr. Strange". Trust me, that's important to know. It also explains where Ant-Man was during Infinity War.
There are a few other honorable mentions: "Avengers: Age of Ultron", "Black Panther", "Spider-Man: Homecoming", and so on. It's impossible to watch all 22 MCU movies for Endgame, so if you wish to catch up, here is your list!
Avengers, assemble!
