A video game review, eh? Well, I promised myself that I wouldn't write about the Bears today (still a sore spot), and entertainment is an area I do want to share my interests in. Activision certainly has my attention.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was released October 12th, and the first person shooter has gotten incredible reviews and a lot of attention from the gaming community. It has successful combined the newest rave of Battle Royale gaming with the mechanics of older COD games that made them so famous.
I want to focus more on the Battle Royale version of the game. The game has other modes that are also entertaining: a solid multiplayer and the classic zombies mode. Zombies has been upgraded, as there are not one, not two, but THREE different zombie campaigns, including one without guns but swords and bows. I'm just as excited as you are to snipe a zombie in the head with an arrow.
The game lacks a solo campaign; instead there are small solo missions to introduce you to the game and who you will play as in multiplayer. The reasoning behind this decision? According to an interview with Game Informer David Vonderhaar on digitaltrends.com, the game was meant to be played with others.
"In an interview with Game Informer, Treyarch’s design director David Vonderhaar and co-studio head Dan Bunting explain that their choice to not include a campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is because it was always meant to be a multiplayer game. Their focus in development was on replayability so they created modes that players can revisit for years to come as opposed to a campaign that is more of a linear, narrative-heavy experience that wouldn’t have much longevity" (excerpt from the Digital Trends review by Gabe Gurwin).
Gaming reviews give the new game stellar reviews. Ign.com rates it an 8.5/10, and according to IGN writer Miranda Sanchez: "Black Ops 4 has a few rough edges, but any of its three modes make for an enjoyable shooter experience that feel distinct and personalized". Metacritc gave it an 85% (which back at my high school is a B), and Digital Trends almost mirrored IGN with an 8/10 rating.
The game has caught the eyes of more than just this writer. Many famous gamers have aquatinted themselves with Black Ops 4. Many famous Twitch streamers, including the alleged best gamer in the world Ninja, have begun to play this game over others, including Fortnite. The building game has made many of these streamers famous, and over a year later the game is still very popular. Many other similar games have tried to mimic or copy the game, but Black Ops 4 has managed to be the most successful.
Now I don't mean to discredit Epic and its game. Both are unique in their own ways. I have played Fortnite and gotten a chance to play Black Ops 4, and both are fun but also completely different styles of play. First person shooters are much different from a third person POV, but neither game deserves discredit due to some lame “which is better” argument, at least not from me.
What makes Black Ops 4 fun is the diversity of the game. There is a wide selection of weapons, as well as multiple attachments for said guns. The map is widespread and realistic; at times it appears like the player is in an actual place. There are a few times where I felt like everything I shot was non existent, as there are a few mechanical issues to the game. However, the action is awesome. Playing the Battle Royale with friends makes it feel like you all are actual soldiers flanking enemies.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is overall an incredible game. COD fans everywhere will love this game, as it continues on from the success from the previous Black Ops games. Battle Royale fans will also get a taste of something new, despite not being able to build a quick wall for cover or spend V-bucks on "cosmetics". Gamers rejoice, 2018 has brought a real competitive shooter to the table.
