Us: A Movie NOT About Us

Updated: Apr 3, 2019

You see what I did with the title? If you remember my “You” review, you’d know.

”Us” is a thriller/horror genre film that came out on March 22nd, 2019. Written, produced and directed by Jordan Peele, “Us” is defined according to wikipedia as the following:

“Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house,

forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of them.”

The film CRUSHED the box office, earning roughly $70 million its opening weekend. Rotten Tomatoes rated it a 94%, Metacritic an 81%, and IMDb a 7.5/10. WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Let’s get one thing straight here: I HATE HORROR MOVIES. But Us, Us was different. It didn’t incorporate jump scares to get fans scared, but rather suspense, a creepy story, and action.

The acting was absolutely incredibly, especially Lupita Nyong'o. The actors and actresses were tasked with playing two roles: a normal person and a “tethered” human, one who is disconnected and without a soul. Of everyone in the movie, Lupita’s acting was the most genuine. Her tethered form‘s voice, the only one who spoke, was raspy and full of pain. Her smile sent shivers down my spine. Winston Duke’s character, on the other hand, provided necessary comedy relief with his dad humor.

That was another great aspect- THE HUMOR. A low key portion, the comedy in this film made it so different from other horror films. This movie literally played (sorry for being explicit) “Fuck the police” as a song!

The music in the film made me gulp in fear. I could feel my heart beat quicken as in different scenes, the music rapidly changing and quickening. Peele did a good job using the music to help make his movie more intense!

There’s a lot of symbolism in this movie. The generally idea of class was a heavy influence. The teathered represented the poor, and the normal people represented the wealthy. The motivation for the teathered made sense: they wanted to be equal and considered normal. As creepy as they were, it made sense what they wanted.

Missed by many, the scene where the red frisbee lands over a blue circle is symbolism of the red cloaked tethered people taking over the blue, aka normal, people. Pretty cool actually.

For those who don’t know what the verse Jeremiah 11:11 is, which is referenced heavily, it’s the following:

“Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.”

This verse was the most googled searched thing the day after this movie came out!

The Sam’s Snippets score of this film was a 9/10. This film was in depth, had tons of scares but also a well thought out plot, and was carried out perfectly with an awesome cast. “Us” is out now, and I recommend you see it!
