Venom, The Comedy?

Updated: Apr 22, 2019

(SPOILERS AHEAD!)

Sony's newest movie "Venom" was released Friday, October 5th and critics gnawed it down like a chicken wing. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an overall 30% on the Tomato meter, and IGN rated it a 4/10. Yikes. Not what you're expecting from a character who's already had a bad past (let's not discuss "Spider-Man 3, please).

Who cares about critics though? It's all about the audience! While Rotten Tomatoes was brutal, the audience reviews was an all high 89%!

The movie is currently the #1 movie in the world. According to a @geekfacts post on Instagram, the film has achieved the biggest opening in October, netting $80 million in the U.S and $205 million internationally. I'd like to think if Venom was a real person (is that the right word to use?), a few movie critics wouldn't have heads at the moment.

Enough analytics, let's dive into an opinion fueled review from a fan of super hero movies and someone who's favorite super hero is Spider Man.

My expectations of this movie was an intense thriller with some slight spooks. I mean, Venom certainly isn't one to appease the eye. What I didn't anticipate was the comedy of this movie; Venom's interactions with protagonist Eddie Brock and his dialogue absolutely make this movie! Yes, the black blob is credited with multiple kills in the movie, but acts like a complete immature child at times. His chirps against Eddie are those similar to a couple of roommates not getting along. I mean, would you want a symbiote to call you a loser?

The action in this movie was also fantastic. The scene where Eddie escapes on his motorcycle with the help of Venom is thrilling, as I felt like I was at a "Fast and Furious" movie. The producers did a successful job with Venom slowly taking over Eddie's body. Fellow movie goers may have heard my shriek of excitement when Venom first fully formed for the first time, oozing and taking shape.

Venom's details were spot on to his origins in the comics. He was big, his teeth were sharp and his eyes were menacing, and the tongue was spot on. I use "Spider-Man 3" as a comparison, considering it's the only other time Venom was taken to theaters. It's no contest, as Sony successfully reanimated the anti-hero.

Speaking of symbiotes, Venom wasn't the only monster on the screen. The producers took a different approach to the film's villain, they choose to create a meaner, scarier version of Venom called Riot. Grey and armed with blades, spikes, and axes, Riot makes Venom look like a child. Did I have any idea who he was? No. Did I enjoy a Venom vs Riot symbiotic dual? Absolutely!

Overall, the movie was extremely entertaining. There were some mechanical issues, a few plot holes, and some serious CGI problems. These aside, this film was incredible to watch, with a perfect blend of action, comedy, and seriousness. Superhero fans all over will truly appreciate this remake of an under appreciated character in the Marvel universe, while get some serious laughs all these hero movies appear to have these days. The Sam’s Snippets Score? 5.6/10!
